949. Lily and Remus had a thing in their fifth year - they both kept it quiet as they knew it would hurt James so much. However, a certain Severus Snape walked in on them when they were 'spending some time together' in a disused classroom. Remus could tell, then, immediately - just by the look of twisted jealousy and utmost pain on Snape's face, that he loved her too. When Remus and Lily decided to end it, Remus was thankful that James effectively took her away from him. But that moment remained with Remus and Snape for the rest of their lives, and that was why, out of all the Marauders, Remus respected Snape most and Snape respected Remus most.
